Miles For Michael

Each year, Miles for Michael brings together a diverse community of all ages and abilities for the single cause of supporting the South Huntington Wildcats. Over the years, as participation has grown and Miles for Michael has become a staple annual event, organizers have adapted to create new and different opportunities for participants to enjoy. Presented by the South Huntington Educational Foundation and the South Huntington Union Free School District, you are invited to participate in the way that is just right for you!

Meet Michael

Michael Gallagher was born and raised in the South Huntington community, attending the elementary and middle schools in the district and graduating from Walt Whitman High School in June 2012. As most young adults with hopes and aspirations, Michael was eagerly anticipating his next phase of life, attending SUNY Stony Brook. God had other plans for Michael, and he passed away on June 18, 2014, after a valiant two-year battle with colon cancer. Right up until his last days, Michael was convinced that he’d be cured, and he talked about his plans for the future. He even talked about picking up a second major in college in the fall because his experiences had taught him that you had to broaden and open your mind to life’s endless possibilities.  Those of us who watched Michael’s journey up close were amazed at his tenacity and bravery in the face of his cancer. He was able to stay so positive in large part because of all of the love, support and prayers that surrounded him, both at home and within our community.
